Last year I got a lovely call out of the blue from a lady at the Yorkshire Choice Awards to tell me that I had been nominated for a Business Woman of the Year Award. The awards recognise local businesses and individuals who are inspirational in their field. So, as you can imagine I was absolutely thrilled!
On Saturday I went along to the posh spangly awards ceremony at Leeds Utd Football Club, taking my good friend Julie along for moral support, and, of course, for a lovely night out!
The Business Woman of the Year category was the largest of the event, and with so many great nominees I knew it would be a miracle if I won, but that wasn’t really the point. For me it was about being in a room with so many inspiring people and hearing their stories.
Kate Hardcastle from Insight With Passion deservedly won my category. In the 5 years she has been in business she has supported over 2,000 start up businesses while also helping the community and charities. Go Kate!
Making Barnsley proud were Crafty Business friend Eve Lodge of Barmy Bunting who was finalist for Young Achiever of The Year award, and Leah Washington and Joe Pugh who were finalists in the Inspirational Individual category. I was lucky enough to share a table with Eve, Leah and Joe, amongst others.
Eve was only 14 years old when she started Barmy through a school initiative ‘I Know I Can’. Now 18, Eve has a string of awards and business experience under her belt, and Barmy is going strong.
Leah and Joe who were brought in to the public eye when they were hurt in the crash of The Smiler ride at Alton Towers last Summer. The couple have been through so much over the last year, but set their hearts on raising money for the fire and ambulance services that helped them during the accident. They told me about the incredibly successful event that they held and kindly gave me some helpful tips for my future fundraising plans (more to be revealed soon!).
It was a really great night, which I was genuinely pleased to have been a part of. The following morning, however, I must say I wasn’t at my best!
I still have no idea who nominated me. Ever since that first phone call I’ve been wondering which kind person went out of their way to do so. Whoever you are, I thank you!
